Our Story

Kangela has its own circular duiker trail within the estate’s natural sand forest, and many of the trees are scientifically labelled. Small antelope, snakes and birdlife frequent the area. The area is well known for its variety and abundance of butterflies.

The Estate is a stone’s throw from the village of Malongane where shops full of vibrant beach clothes, beautiful carvings, curios and jewellery will tempt the most seasoned traveller. Restaurants , Bars are plentiful . A  pharmacy and the many little stores provide all the necessities, while Poa , the local bread is baked daily in the village. 

Activities

The vast stretch of beach is perfect for running, walking and cycling or simply chilling, while the ocean offers a host of activities. Snorkelling in the bay, surfing, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, swimming with the dolphins, paragliding  and kite surfing are all available in and around Malongane.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving: Explore the renowned dive sites near Malongane Point within the Ponta Do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve. Dive services are available for all levels of experience.

Deep Sea Fishing: Charter a boat for an unforgettable day at sea, casting lines into the abundant waters.

Turtles: The Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles return each year, nesting between November and February with the hatchlings emerging after a 2 month incubation. Observe these gigantic creatures lay their eggs and return to the ocean on their own compass. Extreme care is taken to leave the egg laying turtles and the hatchlings as they emerge from the sand undisturbed and allow nature to take its course. A research station is located in the area and nests are marked to prevent damage.

Swim with the Dolphins: Experienced marine enthusiasts in Ponta Malongane and Pomta Do Ouro will give you the opportunity to swim with the bottlenose dolphin close to shore. Lessons in safety and how to interact with dolphin will first be taught before venturing out to swim with one of the oceans most fascinating and respected mammals.

Whale watching: The magnificent Humpback and Southern Right whales can be seen from your deck, between July and October, while heading south . Young calves frolic with their mothers as they slowly make their way back to Antarctica.

Malongane and Beyond:

  • Ponta Do Ouro is a lively town 10kms south of Malongane, with a beautiful protected bay, beachside restaurants, a beach Spa and many craft shops worth spending a day exploring.
  • The capital Maputo is a mere 125kms tar road from Malongane and a visit to a city that combines its colonial past, while embracing a modern future is a must see. Enjoy crossing the splendid Maputo Katembe Suspension Bridge, an engineering triumph.
  • The Maputo Special Elephant Reserve lies 25kms north of Malongane, and is part of the Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area. The reserve, while not in the “Big 5” league, boasts elephant, giraffe, antelope etc. and an abundance of birdlife. Efforts to restock wildlife is an ongoing project.
